Ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system and is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the United States. Currently, the five-year relative survival rate is 47% for all types of ovarian cancer.1 If ovarian cancer is found and treated before the cancer has spread outside the ovary, the five-year relative survival rate is 92%. Sadly, only 15% of all ovarian cancers are diagnosed at this early stage, because the symptoms are vague or similar to other common illnesses. A combination of early diagnosis and centralized management is thought to be a key factor to optimize survival. However, because the true nature of the disease is unknown before surgery, a large proportion of women with ovarian cancer are still treated by general surgeons, although such centralized care is recommended.
